The weather outside is frightful! And it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting a break from this rain anytime soon. So your body may be gently (or not so gently!) reminding you that it’s time to see your chiropractor, who can alleviate the inflammation and subsequent pain that can come with this kind of weather. As far back as the 1960s, medical researchers have found, over and over again, that there is a genuine connection between increased pain and cold, wet weather. Fluctuating barometric pressure affects us, especially in Texas, where our temperatures and humidity are difficult to predict, causing our bodies to be in a constant state of adaptation against the ever-changing outside forces. This shift in air pressure may be enough to dilate the blood vessels in the body, stimulating the nerve endings in sensitive areas.
According to Psychology Today, a drop in barometric pressure can lessen blood flow to the muscles. Less blood flow means toxins from muscles are not being flushed as well, which results in pain and stiffness. This lack of mobility can, of course, limit the spine’s flexibility, allowing it to get stuck in not-so-nice dislocations.
So what can you do when the rain brings you pain?
See your chiropractor, of course! Chiropractic adjustments release choked-up nerves, increasing blood flow and flexibility, and knocking out pain.
Other tips for pain relief during this soggy weather:
Gentle stretching is the best way to start your day!
Maintain a healthy weight through a healthy diet and exercise to decrease strain on joints, especially the knees.
Be sure to get enough sleep!
Supplements like a magnesium/calcium combo and MSM help relieve joint pain and inflammation.
